Where we went wrong

The Bookham Bugle makes mistakes. Errors of fact and spelling will be corrected immediately; matters of dispute will be addressed by supplementary items. As far as possible, all will be listed here.

June 29, 2009
Co-Op, formerly Rusts
In an article last updated in April, we said that the Co-Op at the top of Bookham High Street had been guilty of selling Carlsberg Special Brew, an extremely strong lager, at £2.99 for four cans. This assertion was based on a photograph the Bugle's editor took of a shelf in the supermarket in December last year. Close examination of the picture shows that the Special Brew cans had been stacked on the wrong part of the shelf, and that they were on sale for £5.49, which is not an unreasonable price for this strength of lager.
We have neither been approached by the Co-Op nor asked by them to make this correction. We just think we should put the record straight.

Peter Seaward
Friends and foes alike have pointed out that early versions of our report of the June 2 BRA meeting contained references to BRA chairman Peter Seaward that were an unnecessary caricature and may have caused offence. The Bugle's article described the meeting as we saw it and we stand by our report. We have decided, however, that the case against the way the organisation is being run is quite strong enough without the need to descend into personal attacks and have withdrawn the offending words. We apologise to readers for this lapse of taste.

July 30 2006:
Emily Scott
Careless typing changed the name of Bookham youth campaigner Emily Scott to 'Stott' in our report on the future of the Bookham Youth Centre. Profuse embarrassed apologies.

July 4 2006:
Leatherhead Advertiser
An early draft of our report about the LAd's Mole Valley 'school crime' story said the paper 'made no effort' to draw a distinction between events happening round schools and the involvement of staff or students in those events. In fact, as the updated version now shows, the report quoted a Surrey Police spokesman on this distinction. We apologise to reporter Nicola Rider for any embarrassment this silly oversight may have caused.

May 9 2006:
Market Our early information about the Bookham Market gave the wrong opening time. The market opens each Friday at 10.15, not 10.00 as reported.
Peter Seaward Early Bugle editions referred to Bookham Residents' Association chairman Peter Seaward as 'a former Conservative councillor'. Peter Seaward has never been a councillor for any party. The article confused him with Peter Seabrook, a former councillor for Fetcham West and former chairman of the Mole Valley District Council.
One cause of confusion, though it is still no excuse for the error, was that Peter Seaward was listed a nominee for James Smith, Surrey County Council's Conservative member for Bookham and Fetcham West in the May 2005 elections.
Mr Seaward explains: 'You will also find I believe that The Fetcham [Residents' Association] via Ed Tims also supported Jim Smith's nomination. This does not imply that I support Jim Smith's politics.' So that's all right then.
Double copy Our BRA report of March 29 contained near-duplication of a paragraph about the BRA's attitude to house-building. Blame the editor's unfamiliarity with the technology, but also note the later BRA report, of the AGM, which includes more about the BRA's stance on house-building.
Spelling In the same report, we said the BRA did not have the 'whisp of a mandate.' This was a haste-induced confusion of 'whisper' and, of course, 'wisp'.
